Parenting with a disability: How to prepare for pregnancy and child care

Parenting offers individuals with disabilities numerous benefits.  It serves to normalize your life, foster unique family bonds and strengthens your spousal relationship. However, depending on the type of your disability, you will be presented with distinctive needs both throughout pregnancy and in raising your kids.

Here’s how to plan and prepare for parenting with a disability.

See your doctor often

If the mom-to-be is disabled, schedule a preconception visit to your doctor’s office before conceiving. Your doctor will guide you on the appropriate time to conceive. You will also discuss how your particular disability will affect your pregnancy and childbirth. Throughout the pregnancy, schedule regular visits to your doctor’s to monitor progress.

Organize your finances

Parenting with a disability may come at an extra cost in comparison to parenting for people without a disability because you will need to invest in special child care equipment If the mom-to-be is disabled, she may require special medication, hospital care and additional costs of modifying your home to suit your disability.

Factor in that depending on your type of disability, you may not be able to work while you are pregnant. Start saving before you conceive. Consult with your spouse to determine how your financial needs will be met. Seek financial aid for parents and families with disability to supplement your income.

Carry out appropriate home modifications

Home modifications will vary according to your type of disability. For instance, if you are deaf, you may be concerned about how you will hear your crying child. On the other hand, a parent in a wheelchair may face unique mobility needs. However, with simple and affordable modifications, you can create a safe, easily accessible and functional home for both you and your kids.

The first step to creating a safe home environment regardless of your disability is to declutter. Decluttering makes your home more functional and also eliminates tripping hazards. Fence your home and install gates to prevent children from wandering far off your property where you cannot easily reach them.

Parents with visual disability can install textured items on the wall to guide them to the child’s room. If you do so, avoid placing wall hangings and furniture on that side of the wall.

Improve the accessibility of your home by replacing steps with ramps, purchasing expandable hinges for doorways and Installing non-slip rugs and mats on slippery floors. Install grab bars in tubs and showers. When installing safety equipment such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, ensure they are at a height you can easily access. If you are mentally ill, decorate the house in neutral and cool colors to help you remain calm and relaxed.

Find the right baby care equipment

There is a wide range of adaptable equipment available to facilitate your parenting. These include soft-structured baby carriers for parents with spine injuries, low counters for changing babies and modified cribs.

Educate yourself about baby care

Join a prenatal class where you will find support and also learn the various aspects of pregnancy and child care. Find reputable websites on child care and learn as much as you can in regards to feeding, sleeping, diaper change, breastfeeding, bathing and night care. Educating yourself will give you the confidence to meet your childcare duties. It will also help you to foresee particular needs and challenges in child care that you might face due to your disability.

Parenting is both rewarding and tasking. Planning prepares you and your spouse mentally, emotionally and physically for the journey ahead. Despite the unique challenges you will face along the way, you will find joy and fulfillment in being a parent.
